A Vision Born from Personal Experience

Melinda’s journey to founding Surf Coast Dance Company began with her passion for dance and her personal experiences. As a mother of three children with special needs, she gained a unique perspective on the importance of creating welcoming spaces.

“Having three kids with special needs, I wanted to build a place where anyone could come and dance,” Melinda shares. This deeply personal mission is the cornerstone of her teaching philosophy. Today, her studio is a joyful, inclusive place where students of all abilities experience the transformative power of dance.

From Dream to Reality in Just Three Weeks

Melinda’s husband, Luke, encouraged her to follow her dream of opening a dance studio. He recognized how her teaching could positively impact the community.

“Luke knew what made me happiest was teaching dance and being in a studio,” Melinda recalls. With his support, she took the leap. “Three weeks later, Surf Coast Dance Company was born.”

Two Years of Growth and Connection

Since 2022, this inclusive dance studio in Torquay has flourished. It’s more than a place to learn dance steps, it’s a nurturing community where confidence is built and friendships are formed.

“This has given us a chance to bond over something we love,” Jess shares. “I dance in the adult class on Monday nights, and Stella takes jazz, ballet, and acro. It’s a special connection.”

For 12-year-old Stella, the benefits extend far beyond the studio. “She’s grown so much in confidence,” Jess says proudly. “She even became a house captain at school, thanks to the self-assurance she’s gained from dancing.”

Teaching Kids to Give Back

Melinda instills the importance of giving back into her students.

“Each term, our students choose a cause to support, like the Leukaemia Foundation or a local family in need,” Melinda explains. This teaches students about kindness and reinforces the studio’s core values of connection and community.
